What’s the difference between a snow advisory and winter weather advisory?

I live in Minneapolis. Last night, there was an online posting about a snow advisory for today of 3 to 5 inches of snow.When I woke up this morning, the weather report said the snow advisiory had been canceled, but there was a winter weather advisory for today.Yet, it still snowed! What gives?
