What explains spring snow in the eastern United States?

Many places in the eastern US have the potential to see spring snow long after average temperatures have begun their upward trend. In many places it is not out of the question to see a snow flurry on a calendar date when the historical average high temperature is already above 60F! For some reason the snow threat doesn’t seem to penetrate as far into the autumn as it does into the spring — WHY? What explains “we should be 65 on this date but it’s snowing instead” in the spring when it rarely happens in the fall?
