Do I need to buy rim together with snow tires? What are the problems if I buy snow tires only?

learner asked:

I bought and installed snow tires last year and threw out old tires since they were worn. In the spring, I bought new set of tires and have snow tires unmounted.

Now winter comes again. I want to have the old snow tires mounted. I heard somewhere that the rim cannot afford too many times of mounting and remounting. Is this true? Should I buy rims to go with the snow tires? What are the problems if I don’t buy extra rims?

Thanks in advance.
